City Scanner: Editable Manifold Spatial Armature Generator

City Scanner

Editable-Manifold Spatial Armature Generator

What does the future hold? Is it masses of skyscrapers? Concrete? Glass? Maybe even a material that has yet to be invented? An answer that will remain unattainable. Though helpless in the search for that answer, all of the power is put into our hands. We are the architects of our future. We possess the power to shape whatever is to come to fit societies wants and needs. Though, there is tragedy in the thoughts of the current society. The human race has slipped into a comfortable place, a place where all basic needs are met and we are consumed by want. Through necessity comes progress and the current epoch within which we live has no need to progress towards a better future. This presents a ridiculous reality; the power of progression is stifled by the blinding effect caused by comfort.

Urban sprawl has become an increasingly dangerous problem to the city. It drains its life and relocates it to the periphery. Recently though, there has been a resurgence to move back into the city. This is important in that it will revive some life which was lost to sprawl. To get more people to come back to the city it is important to create new attractive spaces within the boundaries of avoiding urban sprawl. Finding enough space for a new structure can be troublesome in a dense city. So in to strengthen this downtown revival I have developed a scanning method to pinpoint areas of a city which could be developed with socially and culturally charged attractive spaces and spatial sequences. The Example shown here is a scanning of Knoxville, TN and the conclusions which were reached from this process.

Now presented with a frame within which to work and a chosen site within that frame I began to develop a spatial frame at the scale of a building.
